Description
Excellent condition Cream of Wheat cereal bowl featuring Chef Rastus (Frank L. Wright) and the 20th Century Limited locomotive.Pale yellow background. Center artwork predominantly light blue, black, and red. Underneath, marked in gold with following words: "Trade Mark Reg. U. S. & Can. Patent Office ~ Made in U.S.A."
The 20th Century Limited began NYC to Chicago rapid service in 1902. The train locomotive we see on this piece operated in the early 1900's.
Frank
L. White (c. 1867 – February 15, 1938) was a professional chef best known as the model for the fictional breakfast chef (often identified as "Rastus") featured on the boxes of, and advertising for, Cream of Wheat breakfast cereal.
A native of Barbados
, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1875 becoming a citizen
in 1890. He was working as a master chef
at a Chicago restaurant at the time he was photographed for the cereal box in 1900.
Advertising artist was Edward V. Brewer.
