    W.C. HANDY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/07/1944 - HFSID 217298
    W.C. HANDY
The "Father of the Blues" types a letter after getting out of the hospital to vaudeville comedian Joe Laurie, Jr. and wife regarding his health and the well being of the
    Memory Lane
    cast
    Typed Letter Signed: "
    W.C. Handy
    ", 1p, 7¼x11.
Tuckahoe, New York, 1944 January 7.
On his imprinted W.C. Handy letterhead
to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Laurie, Jr.
    , New York, New York.
    Begins:
    "
    Dear friends
    ".
    In full:
    "
I have been out of the hospital now a month and ten days
, and for the first time I have time to sit down and
    tune in on your program
. You will be interested to know each day shows improvement. Even my sight is getting better. The doctor does not require me to go to bed now in the afternoon after my mean (sic, meal)
, but permits to take a walk about fifteen minutes in the yard around the house, but for the past few days the rain, sleet and snow does not. When you have time to write, will you please let me know if anything has happened to any of the members of 'MEMORY LANE'
in the last year. I usually send out Christmas cards, but didn't send any out this year.
I am thinking mainly of Annie Hart
. With best wishes to you and yours for a great 1944, I am Your friend
    ".
    Handwritten Postscript:
    "
    Rosamond was up
and spent a day with me last week.
    "
    JOE LAURIE, JR.
    , who died in 1954, was a
    vaudeville comedian and author
. He had a vaudeville act, Laurie & Bronson, with his first wife, Aleen Bronson, but
at the time of this letter he was married to his second wife, Nellie Butcher
    (1922-1954).
The Rosamond mentioned in the postscript
was Black musician, writer, actor and educator
    J. ROSAMOND JOHNSON
    (1873-1954).
In 1933, both Handy and Johnson appeared in Laurie's
    Memory Lane
    review on the vaudeville circuit.
    Songwriter, cornetist and bandleader
    W.C. HANDY
(1873-1958), who was known as the
    "Father of the Blues",
did not invent the "Blues", but he was
one of the first to use the term in a song title
("Memphis Blues" in 1912), and he published "blue notes" in his compositions, which also included "Beale Street Blues" (1916). Handy, who conducted his own band (1903-1921)
    before becoming a
    music publisher in the 1920s,
was a popular performer until the mid-1940s, when he
    retired due to failing eyesight.
Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
